Which came first?

Did God invent Man (how I hate the sexist term), or did Man invent God?

Is the need for a supernatural Parent/Boss something inherent in human genetic makeup? Because there are certainly enough religions out there claiming to have to truth, to be the One True Church. And people who belong to them are convinced of the superiority of their belief system, enough so that they embark on religious missions, or decide to become martyrs for their God, or never touch pork when many other peoples do. I’m sure jihadists have felt as strongly about their cause as I have felt about mine. Why is mine true and theirs not? Why is theirs true and mine not?

One Response to “Which came first?”

  1. It seems to me religiosity is to some extent intrinsic to human nature. But perhaps not because we feel a psychological need for some kind of boss. Rather, I believe it might have something to do with our innate tendency to perceive personalities in all things.
